Toward STDP-based population action in large networks of spiking neurons

چکیده

We present simulation results that clarify the role of SpikeTiming Dependent Plasticity (STDP) in brain processing as a putative mechanism to transfer spatio-temporal regularities, as observed in sensory signals, toward action, expressed as a global increase of the target population activity, followed by a reset. The repetition of this activation-reset mechanism gives rise to a series of synchronous waves of activity when the same stimulus is repeated over and over. Our simulation results are obtained in recurrent networks of conductance-based neurons under realistic coupling contraints.

Role of STDP in regulation of neural timing networks in human: a simulation study

Many physiological events require an accurate timing signal, usually generated by neural networks called central pattern generators (CPGs). On the other hand, properties of neurons and neural networks (e.g. time constants of neurons and weights of network connections) alter with time, resulting in gradual changes in timing of such networks. Recently, a synaptic weight adjustment mechanism has b...

Versatile networks of simulated spiking neurons displaying winner-take-all behavior

We describe simulations of large-scale networks of excitatory and inhibitory spiking neurons that can generate dynamically stable winner-take-all (WTA) behavior. The network connectivity is a variant of center-surround architecture that we call center-annular-surround (CAS). In this architecture each neuron is excited by nearby neighbors and inhibited by more distant neighbors in an annular-sur...

Analog-digital simulations of full conductance-based networks of spiking neurons with spike timing dependent plasticity.

We introduce and test a system for simulating networks of conductance-based neuron models using analog circuits. At the single-cell level, we use custom-designed analog circuits (ASICs) that simulate two types of spiking neurons based on Hodgkin-Huxley like dynamics: "regular spiking" excitatory neurons with spike-frequency adaptation, and "fast spiking" inhibitory neurons. Synaptic interaction...

STDP Provides the Substrate for Igniting Synfire Chains by Spatiotemporal Input Patterns

Spike-timing-dependent synaptic plasticity (STDP), which depends on the temporal difference between pre- and postsynaptic action potentials, is observed in the cortices and hippocampus. Although several theoretical and experimental studies have revealed its fundamental aspects, its functional role remains unclear. To examine how an input spatiotemporal spike pattern is altered by STDP, we obser...
